Since 1999

The South Lyon Area Recreation Council was formed effective July 1, 1999 through a cooperative inter-local agreement between Green Oak Township, the Charter Township of Lyon, and the City of South Lyon.

The Council effectively became an Authority under Public Act 321 on February 13, 2007.  SLARA serves a total population of 43,348 residents (according to the 2010 Census) within the three municipalities.

The purpose of the Authority is to provide recreation and enrichment opportunities to the community and to construct, operate, maintain and/or improve recreational facilities, including, but not limited to parks, swimming pools, community/recreation centers, auditoriums and any other facilities authorized by Section 5 of Act 321, to acquire land for recreation purposes authorized by Section 5 of Act 321 and to provide recreational services authorized by Act 321.

All official business is performed within the SLARA office located at 10083 Colonial Industrial Dr  in Green Oak Township, Michigan.  The office is open from 8 am – 4 pm Monday thru Friday.

SLARA is not affiliated with the South Lyon Community Schools.  The Authority pays fees to utilize school facilities for programs; therefore, residents discount rates are determined by residency within the 3 participating municipalities; the City of South Lyon, Green Oak Township and Lyon Township.
